Fun
with Spreadsheets!
What is it?
HAzEl is a spreadsheet workbook in OpenOffice's Oasis format for
calculating Az/El trajectory values for aligning earth station antennas
towards geostationary satellites. It features a 1700+ city database,
magnetic variation (Declination) calculation based on WMM 2005 model,
and the ability to select a reference satellite
for Delta-degree offsets.
History
HAzEl has been a hobby project since 1998 when I used it on my
trusty (still working) Zaurus ZR5800, which had a native spreadsheet
application built in. As a simple Az/El calculator for a couple dozen
satellites, it's come in handy over the years on various Psion and Palm
devices. HAzEl has never relied on macros, VBS, or any of that roll
- Calculations are made entirely with standard cell
functions. Since version 0.8.x, the added city database form
usage (drop-down menus), it's a LOT less portable but works for
me.
New version!
Updated satellite list and added a few small utilities for
EIRP, datarate, and IF frequency calculation.
Latest: Seems that display formatting varies between versions and possibly platforms of OpenOffice.
hAzEl-pub-0.8.10.ods OpenOffice 2.2.x and earlier
hAzEl-pub-0.8.10b.ods OpenOffice 2.3.x
hAzEl-pub-0.8.10.xls Excel97 (Special forms, incompatible with OO import)
Also hAzEl-pub-0.6.5.ods
Has MagVar, but no cities/forms.
Credits
Very special thanks to Ed Williams for keeping an ancient
spreadsheet
available from which hAzEl's WMM2005 was based. Aiming formulae and inspiration from Jonathan Higgins and his book Satellite Newsgathering.
